October 3, 2003 Graduate students transform old Lafayette theaterWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University art students are transforming an abandoned Lafayette movie theater with their art. "Coming Attractions: 16 Artists' Installations" highlights the installation art of students from their graduate critique seminar class in art and design. The opening reception will be 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Lafayette Theatre, located at Sixth and Main streets. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts' division of art and design is sponsoring the exhibit, which runs through Nov. 21. Installation art is a genre that incorporates any media to create a visceral or conceptual experience in an environment, says Gurpran Rau, one of the graduate students whose work will be displayed. It can include any media from tree branches to words or, more traditional media, such as sculpture, video, sound, performance and space itself."This site-specific installation exhibition is unique in that these particular works by the artists can only exist in the space for which they were created," said Charles Gick, associate professor of Visual and Performing Arts. "The non-traditional exhibition space forces the students to create an installation piece that responds to this raw and derelict space presented before them." The Wabash Valley Trust donated the abandoned historical site for this exhibit.
