Purdue Crew hires out rowers to raise funds

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Crew team members are trading in their oars for tools as they prepare for their annual Rent-a-Rower fund-raising event.

For $50 per rower, crew team members will work up to five hours, beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday (9/28); Sunday, Oct. 19; Sunday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 15. Potential jobs include yard work, painting, building fences and cleaning out garages.

Ewa Zakrzacki, Purdue crew team vice president, says rowers also took on some specialized work last year.

"We've completed all sorts of jobs in the past, from pulling tires out of a ditch to raking thousands of leaves. We have some big jobs lined up for this year as well."

Approximately 200 student-athletes compete for Purdue Crew. To request a rower, fill out the electronic form on line. Jobs will be filled on a first-come basis. The club will use the proceeds to cover their operational costs, which include travel and competition-participation expenses.

Organized in 1949, Purdue Crew is among the oldest university clubs in the United States. Members practice five days a week on the Wabash River.
