September 25, 2003 School of Education recognizes outstanding teachersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University School of Education honored seven Indiana educators with Crystal Apple Awards for their outstanding contributions to education. The Crystal Apple Awards, which were presented Sept. 19, are sponsored by the school's Dean's Club. Members nominate educators who have shown consistent commitment to making a difference in students' lives. This year's winners were Jane Anne Anderson, Sandra Arini, Louise Bregar, Sue Gombus, Barbara Pedersen, Linda Sorensen and JoAnn Vorst. Anderson is principal at Staunton Elementary School in Brazil, Ind. Prior to her 15 years as principal at the school, she worked for 11 years as a physical education and elementary teacher. She was nominated by Bill and Mary Ann Jenkins. Arini is principal at Fowler Elementary in Fowler, Ind. She has introduced numerous new educational programs to Fowler and led the school to a Four Star designation by the state. She was nominated by Marilyn Haring and Kathy Chambery. Bregar teaches a combined fourth- and fifth-grade class at Miami Elementary School in Lafayette, Ind. She has taught in the Lafayette School Corp. since 1968 and also has coached elementary volleyball and basketball. She was nominated by Vic and Sheila Klinker. Gombus is a fifth-grade teacher at Benjamin Harrison Elementary School in East Chicago, Ind. A 10-year teacher, she was the first classroom teacher to participate in Purdue's Program for Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology. She was nominated by James Lehman. Pedersen is director of the Connected Learning Assures Successful Students initiative and the Literacy for Life Project at Central Elementary School in Lebanon, Ind. She has also written several educational compact discs. She was nominated by Gerald and Sharon Krockover. Linda Sorensen retired this spring as director of guidance at the West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School in West Lafayette, Ind. She had been a counselor at West Lafayette for 15 years and before that was a home economics teacher. She was nominated by Barbara Cook. Vorst is director of the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy in Lafayette, Ind. She has been the director of the center since it began 27 years ago and has added to its literacy education programs that help students prepare for GED and SAT, as well as gain job training. She was nominated by Robert and Barbara Kane. More information on each honoree is available online.
