September 23, 2003 Roundup Ready pioneer to speak at Purdue, Monsanto eventWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – One of the primary inventors of Roundup Ready crop technology will speak at Purdue University on Friday, Oct. 3. Robert T. Fraley, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Monsanto, will speak about biotechnology and its future at the upcoming Purdue-Monsanto Seminar Exchange. His talk is entitled "Biotechnology: Delivering on the Promise." Fraley has been at the forefront of biotechnology research for more than 20 years. He was central to the discovery, development and commercialization of Roundup Ready crops and is the author of more than 100 publications and patent applications relating to technical advances in agricultural biotechnology. "Dr. Fraley is a visionary leader in the agricultural biotechnology industry," said Marshall Martin, associate director of agriculture research programs. "He played a central role in the early development of crop traits to offer growers new approaches to control insects and weeds. Currently, he is offering leadership in the development of novel crop traits to produce more nutritious food and pharmaceutical products." Martin said the seminar series is an opportunity for scientific exchange between Purdue and Monsanto. The lectures are free and open to the public. Fraley's presentation should be of interest to researchers in agriculture, pharmacy, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical engineering and those involved in business management. This public seminar will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Krannert Auditorium on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. A reception is planned in the Krannert Drawing Room immediately following the presentation.
