Professors lead conversations on teaching, learning

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Office of the Provost announces the 2003-04 Conversations on Teaching schedule, a Focus on Teaching series, which celebrates Purdue University's commitment to teaching and the learning experience.

The series begins with George M. Bodner, Arthur Kelly Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Education, presenting "Eternal Verities: How the Results of Research in Learning Can Improve the Way We Teach," at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday (9/23) in Stewart Center, Room 318.

Bodner's talk will examine what has been learned from doing research on how individuals of all ages learn, said Neal Houze, professor of chemical engineering and organizer for Conversations on Teaching.

The schedule for this year includes:

Oct. 23, David C. Meyer, professor of electrical and computer engineering, "Practical Realities of Outcome Assessment."

Nov. 18, Rosalee A. Clawson, associate professor of political science, "Discussion in the Classroom."

Jan. 22, 2004, John P. Campbell, associate vice president for instructional services, "Pedagogy: From Paper to Pixels."

Feb. 26, 2004, William C. Oakes, co-director of Engineering Projects In Community Service and professor of freshman engineering, "Service Learning."

March 23, 2004, Joseph M. LaLopa, associate professor of hospitality and tourism management, "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."

All of these sessions are 3:30 p.m. The location will be announced later in the semester.

Also, Gene Keady, men's basketball coach, is the guest speaker at the Teaching Academy Induction at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 in Fowler Hall.
