Purdue to display variety of expertise at Farm Progress Show

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – From protecting trees in urban areas to starting a new business, exhibits at the Farm Progress Show will highlight a variety of programs offered by Purdue University Extension.

This year's show runs from Sept. 23-25 near Henning Ill., close to the Indiana border.

"Purdue Extension exhibits will interest producers and their families," said David Petritz, director of Purdue Extension. "In addition to information on how to handle pests and site-specific farming, we also will feature topics like dealing with fears and the concerns of being overweight."

Other Purdue Extension displays include information on:

• Animal sciences research.

• Veterinary medicine.

• Environmental and land use concerns.

• Retention pond safety.

• Using plants to clean contaminated soils.

• EDEN, the Extension Disaster Education Network.

Because the show is in Illinois, Purdue also is joining forces with the University of Illinois in a tent that features program partnerships between the two institutions. Joint programs on display will include:

• Illinois and Indiana Sea Grant, an effort to protect waterways in the two states.

• Five State Beef Initiative, a program to improve the profitability of cattle producers.

• Site-specific crop research.

• Obesity and overweight issues.

• Information for farmers and rural residents with disabilities

Representatives of Purdue School of Agriculture's academic departments also will be on hand to answer questions from potential students. More information about university exhibits may be found on the Web.

This is the 50th anniversary for the Farm Progress Show, which was first held in 1953 on the Earl Bass farm, located about five miles from the site of this year's show. Purdue and Illinois also partnered together at that first show.

The Farm Progress Show features the latest in agricultural advances and will take place on 1,800 acres owned by the Peter Gernand and Scott Clark families.
