Jewish Studies Program slates open house, speaker series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A variety of speakers will be featured at the Jewish studies' public lecture, open house and noon series this semester at Purdue University.

An open house for Jewish studies, which is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Hillel Foundation, 912 West State St. Faculty, staff, students and friends of Jewish studies will be on hand to discuss their research or studies relative to the Jewish Studies Program, said Gordon Young, associate professor of history and director of Jewish studies. Also, the Lafayette Klezmorim, a local Jewish music group, will perform.

Dr. George K. Brodell, a Lafayette cardiologist, will speak at a public lecture at 8 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Krannert Auditorium. Brodell will present "Tough Medical Ethical Questions: Specific Situations and Modern Jewish Solutions." Brodell will be assisted by Rabbi Audrey S. Pollack from Temple Israel in West Lafayette.

The public lecture and the noon speakers series are free and open to the public.

The Jewish Studies Noon Series begins at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 in Stewart Center, Room 318. Jennifer William, Purdue assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, will present "Transgression and Jewish Identity in the Literary Works of Joseph Roth."

Future noon series events include:

• Oct. 1, 12:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318. Maren Linett, assistant professor of English, will present "What Good is Supersessionism to Avant-Garde Fiction? Anti-Semitism and Christian Self-Fashioning in Dorothy Richardson and Virginia Woolf." 

• Oct. 15, 12:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 214D. Stuart Robertson, pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette and biblical Hebrew lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, will present "Elijah Gaon."

• Oct. 29, 12:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318. Dara Hill Fishberg, 2003 winner of the B'nai B'rith Barzillai Lodge No. 111 Prize in Jewish Studies and a Jewish studies major, will present "History of Women in the Rabbinate."

• Nov. 12, 12:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 313. Kingsley K. Wu, professor emeritus in visual and performing arts, will present "The Jews of Kaifeng, China."

• Dec. 3, 12:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318. Daniel Morris, professor of English, will present, "On Intersubjectivity and Cultural Creativity: Tyagan Miller's Photo-Essay 'Covenant.'"
