Purdue student arrested after alleged attack

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University student was arrested for allegedly attacking another student Friday (9/12) morning in a residence hall.

Joseph M. Botteron, 19, a freshman in the School of Agriculture from Fort Wayne, Ind., was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail at approximately 7:30 a.m. where he was being held on suspicion of battery and consumption of alcohol by a minor.

John Cox, Purdue University Police Department captain of special services, said police were called to Wiley Hall at 5:16 a.m. Botteron had allegedly attacked a 17-year-old international student in Wiley Hall, where they both are residents.

The alleged victim's chest and back were bruised, but he refused medical treatment, Cox said.

Cox said police are investigating whether the attack may have been racially motivated.
