Purdue Extension to offer venison workshops

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor three venison workshops across Indiana to offer tips on how to prepare meals in which the main course is deer.

The first will be at 6 p.m. Monday (9/15) at the W.G. Smith Building, 2221 N. Memorial Drive, New Castle. The second workshop will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (9/16) at Perry Central High School, 18677 Old State Road 37, Leopold. The final workshop will be at 6 p.m. Thursday (9/18) at the Southeast Purdue Ag Center, 4425 E. County Road 350 N., Butlerville.

At each location a deer will be dressed and then prepared in a variety of ways for participants to taste. Hubert Schmeider, Purdue chef emeritus, will prepare the food each evening.

Other topics to be discussed include food safety, handling procedures and an update on chronic wasting disease, a transmissible illness found only in the animal family that includes deer, elk, caribou and moose.

Registration is required and costs $5 at the New Castle and Butlerville locations and $10 at the Leopold location. To register, contact Jonathan Ferris at (765) 529-5002 to attend on Sept. 15, Allen Ullom at (812) 547-7084 to attend on Sept. 16 and David Osborne at (812) 689-6511 to attend on Sept. 18.
