West Lafayette man arrested for thefts from Recreational Sports Center

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police today (Wednesday, 8/27) arrested a West Lafayette man for allegedly stealing several items from visitors to the university's Recreational Sports Center.

Lamont Lane, 20, 2003 Willowbrook Lane, Apt. 124, was arrested on two counts each of theft and fraud. He was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail at 2:10 p.m. and was being held in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond.

Lane allegedly stole two wallets, cash, credit cards, keys and a watch from the Recreational Sports Center sometime around Aug. 22, said Steven R. Dietrich, interim police chief. According to a police report, Lane is believed to have used the credit cards to withdraw cash from two automated teller machines on campus. During a search of Lane's apartment, police found other items thought to have been stolen, Dietrich said.

According to police, Lane was arrested in November 2002 on forgery and theft charges, for which he was sentenced on Aug. 13 to four years on probation. Dietrich said police would file a petition to have Lane's probation revoked.

"It's important for those using Purdue facilities, such as the Recreational Sports Center, to make sure their personal effects are safely secured," Dietrich said.

Theft and fraud, both Class D felonies, are punishable by up to three years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
