Purdue student wins Big Ten writing award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference recently presented a prestigious writing award to a Purdue University student majoring in communication and psychology.

Doug Elish, a senior from Chesterton, Ind., received the William R. Reed Memorial Award. The award is presented each year to a student from one of the Big Ten campuses whose writing exemplifies spirit and a dedication to the Big Ten and intercollegiate athletics. It is named in honor of former Big Ten Commissioner William R. Reed, who served the conference for more than 20 years.

Elish serves as sports editor of "The Exponent," the Purdue student newspaper. Prior experience includes serving as the sports editor of "The Spectator," the student newspaper at Purdue North Central, and as sports director for his high school radio station.

Elish has been named to the dean's list six times and is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.

Purdue student from Bloomington receives scholarship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue School of Education has awarded a $500 scholarship to Amanda M. James, a junior in the School of Science from Bloomington, Ind.

The award was presented for academic merit and community service. James enjoys tutoring elementary school children in her spare time.
