Appointments, promotions; faculty, staff and alumni honors

 

APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

– Shari J. Schrader has been appointed the new director of development for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Schrader was previously employed by the Lafayette Catholic Schools as development director.

 

FACULTY AND STAFF HONORS

– Jules Janick, professor of horticulture, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the University of Pisa in Italy. He will be one of only 800 U.S. faculty and professionals promoting understanding between the United States and other countries around the world.

– Jue Chen, assistant professor of biological sciences, has been named a 2003 Pew Scholar by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Each year since 1985, the organization has selected 20 junior researchers in the biomedical sciences who show outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences. Chen will receive $240,000 over the next four years to support her research, which includes an investigation into the structural biology of membrane proteins.

– Pamala V. Morris, associate professor of 4-H youth in the School of Agriculture, has received a $5,000 faculty fellowship from Indiana Compact. The award, funded by a Lilly Endowment grant, will be used to develop a 4-H related service-learning project.

– John G. Pomery, associate professor of economics at the Krannert School of Management, has received a $5,000 senior fellowship from Indiana Compact. The award, funded by a Lilly Endowment grant, will be used to develop an economics related service-learning project. As a senior fellow, Pomery also will mentor other fellows, evaluate projects and chair the faculty fellow selection committee.

– Indiana University and Purdue University are one of two sets of winners of the 2003 EDUCAUSE Award for Excellence in Networking. The universities won the award for creating I-Light: Indiana's Optical Fiber Network, recognizing "strategic, innovative networking programs or practices that improve the quality of campus network services through new or enhanced network architectures, infrastructure, integration, management and operational practices," according to a statement from EDUCAUSE. IU and Purdue will be honored with a commemorative plaque at a recognition breakfast and a general session of the EDUCAUSE annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., on Nov. 6. Later that day, IU and Purdue representatives will describe the I-Light infrastructure development at a session. With a membership of nearly 1,900 colleges, universities and education organizations, and more than 180 corporations, EDUCAUSE is an association addressing the issues of incorporating information technologies and resources into the higher education mission. The association has offices in Washington, D.C., and Boulder, Colo.

– Souvigny Salisbury, doctor of veterinary medicine and professor of surgery in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, has received the Student American Veterinary Medical Association Teaching Excellence Award. The award is given to recognize excellence, innovation and enthusiasm in the field of clinical veterinary science and education.

 

ALUMNI HONORS

– William J. Browning, president of Applied Mathematics Inc., Gales Ferry, Conn., was honored as the Naval Submarine League Distinguished Civilian for 2003 at the league's annual symposium in Alexandria, Va., on June 12. The award was presented by Adm. Frank Kelso, USN (ret.), chairman of the Naval Submarine League and former chief of naval operations, "for meritorious service sustained over three decades of developing analytical tools to support every aspect of submarine warfare analysis. Since 1974, Dr. Browning has been on the cutting edge of every issue of submarine tactics. His professional contributions cover the entire spectrum of submarine missions, sensors and weapons." Browning received his bachelor's (1968), master's (1969) and doctorate (1974) degrees in mathematics from Purdue and currently serves on the Purdue University School of Science Dean's Leadership Council. He is a 1995 School of Science Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient.
