August 13, 2003 Purdue Galleries offers new season of diverse visionsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The diverse themes of land and sky will be highlighted this fall as Purdue Galleries begins its 2003-04 schedule of exhibitions.
"Sky, Blue, Heavens" will be presented in the Stewart Center Gallery from Sept. 2 through Oct. 12. In celebration of the centennial of flight, nine artists from across the nation have created responses to the technological and cultural phenomenon of manned flight. The show will feature photography, sculpture, printmaking and an artist's book. Included in the exhibit are the works of Mark Abrahamson from Stanwood, Wash, John Ferdico from Oakland, Calif., Karen Hanmer from Glenview, Ill., Katherine Kadish from Yellow Springs, Ohio, Sarah Marshall from Tuscaloosa, Ala., Tom Morin from Rochester, N.Y., Arnold Nadler from St. Louis, Mo., Tamara Staples from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Rachel Stevens from Las Cruces, N.M. To introduce the exhibit, a reception will take place in the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4. The exhibit is being presented in connection with Purdue University's Centennial of Flight activities, which will include a Purdue Convocations presentation of a new touring production by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company called "The Flight Project." The Galleries will co-sponsor a preperformance lecture on the production by Kevin Ward, artistic director of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Stewart Center Gallery. The lecture will take place among visual artworks on the same theme. The first exhibit to open the Ringel Gallery schedule will be "Land, Site, Scene," on display from Sept. 2 through Oct. 12. Continuing a practice of interactive exhibitions begun with an exhibit called "Li'l Heads," landscape artworks from the Galleries' permanent collection will be displayed in the Ringel Gallery with room for visitors to add their own landscapes to the display. Elizabeth Menon, assistant professor of art and design, will present a brown bag lecture at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 3. She will discuss the history and nature of the landscape genre, as well as the "picturesque tour." Handouts mapping a picturesque tour of the Purdue campus and Lafayette-West Lafayette area will be available in the gallery and on the Galleries Web site. The works created for the exhibition by visitors will be celebrated at a reception from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. Other upcoming exhibits include: • "The Art of Twinrocker" (Oct. 27-Dec. 7) – An exhibition of artwork and "livres de luxe" produced on Twinrocker Handmade Papers, located in Brookston, Ind. Twinrocker's owners and operators, Kathryn and Howard Clark, have assembled the exhibit from the collections of anonymous lenders. • "25th Anniversary Show" (Oct. 27-Dec. 7) – To commemorate the Galleries' anniversary, artists whose work is represented in the permanent collection have been invited to contribute "anniversary cards" in the form of new artworks. The contributions are being created on Twinrocker handmade papers. • "Bead International" (Jan. 12-Feb. 22) – This juried exhibit of artwork from around the world features objects created with, or incorporating the use of, beads. The exhibit was developed by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. • "Sixty Square Inches" (March 8—April 25) – The Galleries' 14th biennial small print competition will be open for the first time to artists in all of North America. Purdue Galleries director Craig Martin anticipates that many people will take advantage of what the galleries have to offer during the upcoming season. "In 2003-2004 we look forward to providing visitors with opportunities to experience a wide range of artistic expressions," Martin said. "From landscape art by the famous and the soon-to-be, to strange and wonderful expressions of the freedom of flight, to inventive messages on handmade papers, to colorful beaded objects and recent graphic images from all over North America, new visions will pervade the Galleries schedule in the coming months." In the past few years, the Galleries also have created new programs and initiatives designed to play a role in area K-12 education. Classes have visited the university's galleries, and Galleries staff have gone to elementary schools, middle schools and high schools throughout Tippecanoe, Benton, Clinton, Carroll and Montgomery counties. More than 2,000 students and teachers took advantage of the exhibits and activities offered last year, including Purdue's chapter of "College Mentors for Kids!" "We can gladly say that we brought art experiences to new audiences of all ages in the past year, and we look forward to surpassing those successes in the coming year," Martin said. In addition to new art, Galleries also is introducing a new face this year. Michal Hathaway will be the assistant director for facilities and collections. Hathaway was formerly preparator and curator at the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art. He plans to upgrade the collections database to allow greater accessibility to records and imagery for educators both on and off campus. There also will be a professional development day on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Area art teachers will be invited to visit Purdue for a participatory introduction to the "Land, Site, Scene" exhibit and an overview of the exhibits and collections. The opportunity for classroom presentations by Purdue Galleries staff also will be explored. The Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union and the Stewart Center Gallery in Stewart Center are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; until 8 p.m. on Thursday; and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.
