Appointments, promotions, faculty and staff honors

Appointments and promotions
– Douglas Hurt has been named head of the Department of History in the School of Liberal Arts. Hurt recently served as professor and director of the graduate program in agricultural history and rural studies at Iowa State University. His research and teaching expertise is in United States agricultural and rural history in the Midwest, South and West.

– Viktor Gecas has been named head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the School of Liberal Arts. Gecas recently served as professor of sociology and rural sociology at Washington State University. His research and teaching expertise is in family and marital socialization.

 

Faculty and staff honors
– Michael Stitsworth, director of International Programs in Agriculture, and Linda Vallade, international academic programs specialist, were awarded the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award by the Commission of International Programs. The award, given based on outstanding contributions toward furthering international programs in their field or discipline, was presented July 11 in Vancouver.

– Elizabeth Hoffmann, assistant professor of sociology in the School of Liberal Arts, was awarded a fellowship to attend the Summer Institute at the University of California-Berkeley. Law and society scholars mentor and work with the junior faculty selected to attend the institute, which took place in July.
