Expert weighs pros, cons when eating sport fish

Anglers need to be cautious when it comes to eating the fish they pull from Indiana streams, says a Purdue University fish expert.

"We want to encourage everyone to eat fish because it is the main dietary source for omega-3 fatty acids," says Charles Santerre, a foods and nutrition professor who specializes in chemical contaminants in food. "We would like Indiana residents to continue to fish. However, we strongly recommend that pregnant or nursing women and young children avoid wild fish unless they have consulted the Indiana Fish Consumption Advisory."

The advisory can be found at https://fn.cfs.purdue.edu/anglingindiana/. Santerre created the site and also provides information about the health risks of eating fish. In addition to the consumption advisory on the Angling Indiana Web site, the site also has information about fish nutrition, fish preparation, aquaculture and wild fish, and Indiana waterways.

The Indiana State Department of Health released the 2003 Indiana Fish Consumption Advisory today (Monday, 7/28). The department's news release is available at https://www.in.gov/isdh/whatsnew/news/07-28-2003.htm. For more information visit https://www.ai.org/isdh/dataandstats/fish/fish_adv_index.htm.
