Purdue sets theme to engage Hoosiers, nation: 'It's Happening Here!'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - "Purdue: It's Happening Here!" will be the theme for Purdue University's marketing, special events and major gift announcements during the 2003-04 academic year.

Murray M. Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement, announced the new theme today (Friday, 7/11) during the Purdue Board of Trustees meeting.

Blackwelder told the trustees the brief statement sums up the university's heightened efforts to engage Hoosiers about research and discoveries in science and technology, increased efforts to promote and encourage diversity, and Purdue's leadership as an engine for new economic opportunities in Indiana.

"When we say 'It's Happening Here,' we are telling the world that Purdue has a lot of great things to offer," he said. "The new theme expresses our message that Purdue is moving forward, as outlined in our strategic plan initiated just three years ago. If you look at our campus, you can see and feel the excitement that Purdue's efforts to move forward have created.

"Innovations in the areas of learning, discovery and engagement continue to help establish the university's reputation as a leader, demonstrating that what happens on Purdue's campuses has the potential to improve the lives of Indiana residents dramatically and to make a difference in the world at large."

Purdue's previous theme, "Discover Purdue," helped launch an extensive state and nationwide outreach effort, including Purdue Days throughout Indiana, during which university officials and alumni traveled to cities and towns, giving people a glimpse of happenings and discoveries within the university, as well as providing an opportunity to interact with faculty and staff.

As part of Purdue Days last year, President Martin C. Jischke visited 10 locations around Indiana and an additional 10 cities outside the state. Plans are under way for 2003-04 Purdue Days, ranging from South Bend to Bloomington.

"Purdue is moving forward," Blackwelder said. "I think our constituents are excited when they see the great strides we are making. The campuses are growing and improving, as demonstrated by the completed fundraising for 12 new building projects. We also continue to increase and attract top-notch faculty, improve our diversity, increase scholarship opportunities and be a leader in Indiana's economic future."

The next Purdue Day is scheduled for the Indiana State Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 13. This year's highlights will include a display of more than 50 tents on Main Street with interactive Purdue booths and displays that showcase the university's schools, departments and achievements. Radio personality Garrison Keillor also will perform on Purdue Day at 7:30 p.m. in the Marsh Grandstand.

Through special arrangements with the Indiana State Fair, Purdue will offer seating in the lower grandstands - part of a package that will include a hog roast dinner before the Keillor show and fair admission. Tickets for this package cost $45 per person and are available until July 18 by calling the Purdue Box Office at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW, or online through the Purdue Alumni Association.

Those interested only in tickets for the show can call the Indiana State Fair box office at (317) 927-1482 or Ticketmaster at (317) 239-5151. Tickets are $30 and $25 and include admission to the fair.
