June 27, 2003 Incoming Purdue freshmen invited to orientation programWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Boiler Gold Rush, a week-long orientation program for incoming freshmen at Purdue University, will fill new students’ schedules with fun and informative activities designed to make the adjustment to college life easier. Boiler Gold Rush, sponsored by the Office of Admission's area of Orientation and New Student Programs in cooperation with University Residences, will take place Aug. 16-21, the week before fall semester classes begin. Registration for the program is due by Friday, July 11. Approximately 3,600 students are expected to participate. The orientation program fee is $195. The program will familiarize new students and their parents with the campus and Purdue traditions. Along with comedy shows, concerts and other recreational activities, presentations will stress campus safety, cultural diversity and healthy lifestyle choices. Parents will have the opportunity to attend one of two family orientation sessions from 3:30-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16; and Sunday, Aug. 17, in the Elliott Hall of Music. A Purdue musical group will teach them the university fight song, "Hail Purdue!," A panel of office representatives also will introduce their services and answer questions. The Purdue Alumni Association will present Purdue trivia. Motivational speaker Kevin Wanzer will introduce his formula for a great Purdue experience at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, during opening ceremonies for Boiler Gold Rush. First-year students also will be introduced to Purdue's athletics during "Boilermaker Basics: An Up-Close Look at Purdue Athletics" at the Slayter Center for the Performing Arts at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18. Purdue athletes, cheerleaders and the "All-American" Marching Band will be featured. Other Boiler Gold Rush highlights include Unionfest in the Purdue Memorial Union and Late Night at the Recreational Sports Center from 8 p.m. to midnight on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 18 and 19. Also on Monday, a new multimedia presentation entitled, "Beer, Booze and Books" will address issues dealing with alcohol. It begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Elliott Hall of Music. Issues related to diversity and social responsibility will be explored at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the Elliott Hall of Music. This new presentation will feature 14 peer actors from the Guerilla Theatre Troupe at Illinois State University. A "Meet the Schools" picnic and resource fair will be at the Memorial Mall from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20. It will give students a chance to mingle with approximately 150 school advisers, faculty and staff while enjoying a free lunch from Papa John’s Pizza. A University Resource Fair also will take place on the Engineering Mall at that time. At 8:30 p.m. that evening (8/20), comedian Buzz Sutherland will perform at the Elliott Hall of Music. BGR will conclude with a concert Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Slayter Hill Ampitheater. The event will feature a performance by Social Burns (tentative) and a live broadcast by top-40 radio station B-102.9. A complete listing of the Boiler Gold Rush schedule can be viewed online. Patti Dulik, associate director of orientation and new student programs, said participation in Boiler Gold Rush provides new students with the tools they need to begin their academic careers with confidence. "It is has been proven that students who attend their freshman orientation program and get involved on campus are more likely to excel during their first year of college and are far less likely to drop out," Dulik said. "Therefore, it is extremely important for first-year students to attend Boiler Gold Rush. Participants will not only get acclimated to campus and the Purdue community, but they will also meet many new and current students." Dulik said many life-long friendships have blossomed at BGR. "I talk with a lot of upper-class students who attended Boiler Gold Rush sho say they met their best friend at BGR," Dulik said. "BGR is known to be a lot of fun!"
