Purdue, LightBound to offer information security workshop

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University and the LightBound Internet company will provide a free information security workshop for small businesses on Thursday, Aug. 7, in Shelbyville, Ind.

Business customers from Rush and Shelby counties are invited to attend the all-day workshop at the LightBound boardroom, located at 1626 East State Road 44 in Junction Plaza. LightBound is partnering with the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue to conduct the workshop.

The workshop is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is free, and lunch will be catered by Fiddlers Three restaurant.

Matt Rose, instructional designer at CERIAS, said the workshop's goal is to help improve awareness of information security in Shelby and Rush counties.

"In the 'National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace,' President Bush's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board calls upon business and industry to partner with government and academic institutions to advance the state of information security," Rose said. "While there is a great need across public and private sectors for educating and distributing information to the users and administrators of these systems, home users and small businesses are particularly isolated from educational opportunities such as these."

CERIAS is a multidisciplinary research and education center in information security. The center has leading research and educational programs in various levels of security and assurance, including graduate, undergraduate, K-12 and professional development. Purdue and CERIAS have program offerings at the master's and bachelor's degree levels, and CERIAS also offers programs, workshops and seminars on a variety of topics.

Formed in August 2001, LightBound offers both residential and business class Internet services. In a recent issue of the Indianapolis Business Journal, LightBound was listed as the seventh largest Indianapolis-area dial-up internet service provider.
