Southern Indiana-Purdue Ag Center celebrates 50th anniversary

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Southern Indiana-Purdue Agricultural Center (SIPAC) in Dubois, Ind., will celebrate 50 years of service on Saturday, June 28.

"This is a way of showing our thanks and appreciation to the many people of Indiana that have been a part of SIPAC in the last 50 years," said Jason Tower, SIPAC superintendent.

The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with farm tours, and cattle research and forestry research tours. Activities also will include a tour of the Southern Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. The event is free and open to the public

Following the day's activities will be a supper and an evening program at 6:30 p.m. There is no fee for the evening meal; however, reservations are required. The evening keynote speaker will be Jim Kaiser, a past superintendent of SIPAC during the 1960s. There also will be a slide show with archived pictures of SIPAC.

Originally known as the Forage Farm, SIPAC was managed by the Purdue University agronomy department in the '50s and '60s. Tower said that during the mid-60s SIPAC was transferred into agricultural research.

In the past 50 years, SIPAC has been involved in many advancements in agriculture, Tower said. Research areas include aquaculture, beef cattle, forages, grain sorghum, forestry, soybeans, sheep and several other projects.

SIPAC also is home to the Denis H. Heeke Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.

"The Heeke Laboratory is one of only two facilities in the state where producers can get information regarding disease problems in their livestock operations," Tower said.

SIPAC is located on Purdue Farm Road on the north side of Patoka Lake in Dubois County. To get to SIPAC, follow the signs to the Purdue Diagnostic Lab or Southern Indiana-Purdue Ag Center from State Road 145 S.

For more information or to make reservations for the evening meal, call the Dubois County Extension office at (812) 482-1792.
