Purdue awards scholarships to outstanding female students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University has awarded three Brenta H. Wykoff Scholarships worth $5,000 each.

The scholarship recipients are Jennifer Elise Barnes, an engineering major from Columbus, Ind.; Betty Co, a computer graphics technology major from Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Cassandra Marie Plank, an engineering major from West Terre Haute, Ind.

The scholarships are awarded to female graduates of Indiana high schools who exhibit academic merit.

 

Astronaut hopeful wins scholarship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Jayleen Lynn Guttromson, a junior majoring in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, has won an $8,500 scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation

The Florida-based foundation was created by former astronauts in 1984 to help the United States retain its world leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships for exceptional college students.

Guttromson is an award-winning straight-A student from Fargo, N.D., who is pursuing a career in aerospace engineering and has dreamed of becoming an astronaut since early childhood. She has worked with other students in designing experiments flown on NASA's "vomit comet," an airplane used by the space agency to induce weightlessness for research and astronaut training.

 

Student receives grant for autism research

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Oliver Wendt, a doctoral student in the School of Education's special education program, has been awarded a grant for his project to study the effectiveness of efforts to help children with autism communicate better.

The grant was issued by the scientific research society Sigma Xi through its Grant-in-Aid of Research program, in which about 20 percent of applicants receive grants. Wendt, who is from Benterode, Germany, specializes in the area of augmentative and alternative communication, a relatively new field aiming to improve the communication skills of people with little or no functional speech.

 

Alumni group awards scholarships to students from Indianapolis

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four Purdue University students from the Indianapolis area have received scholarships from the Purdue Association of Indianapolis.

Connie Cripe, a junior from Carmel, Ind., who is majoring in child development and family studies; Allison Martin, a freshman from Indianapolis who is studying aviation technology; and Ryan Storey, a pharmacy student from Indianapolis, each received $2,000. Ruben Schuff, a junior from Indianapolis who is studying aeronautics and astronautics, received the Joe Pierce Memorial Scholarship, worth $2,500. The Purdue Association of Indianapolis, founded in 1890, awards four scholarships each year to Purdue students from Greater Indianapolis who demonstrate academic merit and financial need.

Health Sciences students honored for service, achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Six students in the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University recently received awards for service or scholastic achievements at the annual Health Sciences Awards Banquet.

Eric Frevert, a senior from Greenfield, Ind., who is studying to be a physician's assistant, received the 2003 Service Award. Heather Wright, a senior from Lake Station, Ind., who is studying industrial hygiene, received the Jeff Kizer Award. Lisa Wagoner, a graduate student from Lafayette, Ind., who is studying industrial hygiene, received the Eli Lilly Scholarship in industrial hygiene. Kelly Vogie, a freshman in predentistry from Valparaiso, Ind., received the 2003 Paul Ziemer Award for outstanding freshman scholastic performance. Kyle Siewert, a senior from Springport, Ind., who is studying premedicine, received the Distinguished Health Sciences Student Award. Tina Anslinger, a senior from Haubstadt, Ind., who is studying medical technology, received the 2003 Distinguished Medical Technology Student Award.
