Purdue students invited to audition for PMO ensembles

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Varsity Glee Club and Purduettes will audition prospective members Monday through Thursday (6/16-6/19) at the Purdue Musical Organizations' suite in the Elliott Hall of Music.

Auditions also can be arranged by appointment through the end of June. They will consist of an informational meeting and an individual interview, which will begin at 1 p.m. each day.

Prospective Purduettes and Glee Club members also are asked to prepare two fully memorized songs of varied style and tempo that are two minutes or less in duration. In addition, vocalists must supply a resume and at least two letters of recommendation. A professional accompanist will be provided, but students who audition also can demonstrate their proficiency on an instrument.

Founded in 1893, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, under the direction of Brian Breed, is the oldest choral music organization still in existence at Purdue University. This all-male group has performed for audiences around the world. The Glee Club has traveled on 10 European tours, as well as several tours to Canada, Mexico, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and China. The group regularly appears in concert halls across the United States and has been featured entertainment at many prestigious events, including four presidential inaugurations.

The Purduettes were formed during World War II when members of the Glee Club were leaving for military service so rapidly that the their schedule had to be curtailed. During the war the 13-member ensemble performed throughout the United States. Today the Purduettes, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, features approximately 50 women. The group continues to travel extensively and recently performed at a Cincinnati Reds baseball game.

Breed says he looks forward to more students becoming a member of the PMO family.

"Each year, PMO is excited to welcome the new talent of the freshmen," he says. "Joining PMO not only enhances students' singing abilities, but creates whole new individuals as we strive for excellence to represent Purdue University as ambassadors of song."

All new students can arrange an audition for the Glee Club or Purduettes by contacting the PMO office at (765) 494-3941 or (800) 893-3041 before Thursday (6/19). The Bell Choir, instrumentalists, sound/stage technicians and staff will be cast in the fall. There will be no fall auditions for the Glee Club or Purduettes.
