June 10, 2003 Purdue Black Cultural Center honors studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Black Cultural Center recently honored students at its 30th annual awards banquet. Students were recognized for academic achievements, participation in BCC performing ensembles and service as a member of the BCC staff. Allison Banks, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., who is majoring in organizational leadership and supervision, received the Howard G. McCall Award for her service as a BCC library aide. The $300 award is presented to a student staff member who has demonstrated consistency in leadership, service and dedication to the center. Students who were honored for participating in an ensemble or for being employed by the BCC for three or more semesters include Alliberthe Elysee, a junior from Hyde Park, Mass., who is majoring in early childhood education; Rebecca Reid, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind., who is majoring in chemical engineering; Ruqaiba Desmond, a senior from Indianapolis who is majoring in psychology; Stacia Murphy, a senior from Indianapolis majoring in psychology; and Micere Oden, a junior from Chicago who is majoring in individual and family studies. Academic Award recipients include Elysee, Reid, Brenda McLaurine, a freshman from Indianapolis who is majoring in prepharmacy, and LaKesha Triggs, a junior from Indianapolis majoring in political science. Each Academic Award recipient received $150. The mission of the Black Cultural Center is to enhance the community's understanding of the cultural richness of the African-American experience. The center sponsors four performing arts ensembles in addition to educational workshops, outreach programs, lectures, a library, a permanent art collection and social activities.
