June 6, 2003 Twenty-first Century Scholars Program reaches out to studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An application deadline is fast approaching for students interested in the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program, which provides tuition to Indiana students who might not otherwise be able to attend college. Eligible junior high school students must apply by June 30 of their 8th grade year. They also must meet income guidelines, apply for financial aid and take a pledge. The pledge includes staying drug-free, graduating high school with a GPA of at least 2.0 and being admitted to an eligible Indiana college, university or technical school. Aside from tuition benefits, the program offers free summer camps and visits to colleges and universities throughout Indiana. Other college preparatory activities include tutoring, mentoring, community service projects and newsletters on planning for college. To efficiently provide these services, Indiana is divided into 16 regional sites. Purdue University was named host of the site that serves Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Warren and White counties. Several activities are planned for program participants and their parents in these counties. Scholars can attend summer camp at the Purdue National Youth Sports Program, which will be June 19 through July 25. Two-day summer camps, including a free trip to the Indianapolis Zoo, also are planned. A campus visit to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will take place June 21. While in Indianapolis the scholars also will visit the Indian Market at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. A visit to Purdue's West Lafayette campus will take place June 28. Parents of program participants can meet each other and gather college preparatory information during meetings that will be conducted in each county. Upcoming meetings include: • Carroll County parent meeting. 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 11. Delphi Public Library. • Regional Parent Conference. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19. St. Andrew United Methodist Church, West Lafayette. Melinda Larson, site coordinator for the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program at Purdue University, says she encourages scholars and their parents to participate in as many activities as possible. "Studies have shown links between participating in appropriate activities and succeeding in school," Larson says. "The Twenty-first Century Scholars Program strives to offer various activities for students to expand their horizons by learning, exploring and having lots of fun." Since the program was started in 1995, more than 3,400 participants have earned bachelor's degrees from Indiana colleges and universities. Nearly 4,000 additional participants have been awarded associate degrees. Approximately 650 Twenty-first Century Scholars currently attend Purdue.
