May 23, 2003 Appointments, promotions, faculty and staff honorsAppointments and promotions - Carolyn Percifield has been appointed the director of Purdue's Office of Engineering Planning and Assessment. She will work with the university, the Schools of Engineering administration and other key groups to develop and monitor the progress of a strategic plan for engineering. She will also develop a business plan that includes details of that strategic plan and serve on the dean's cabinet. Percifield has been a member of the engineering dean's administrative team since 1991 and most recently served as the first director of the Office of Engineering Advancement. Faculty and staff honors - Michael Rossmann, professor of biological sciences in Purdue's School of Science, and two colleagues have been awarded a research grant from the Human Frontier Science Program, an international organization that funds interdisciplinary research in basic science. Rossmann's group will receive $350,000 for three years. The group's grant proposal, which requested funds to study viral structure, was ranked first out of the 22 awards the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) made this year from an initial pool of nearly 500 applications. The grants, which are awarded yearly, begin July 1, 2003. Rossmann's collaborators are microbiologist Fumio Arisaka of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and geneticist Vadim Mesyanzhikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The group will study the structure of the T4 virus, which infects the E. coli bacterium. The HFSP supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience. Emphasis is placed on collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences. - Jean Peterson, an associate professor of educational studies and coordinator of Purdue's school counselor preparation program, received the national Group-Work Practice Award from the Association for Specialists in Group Work, a division of the American Counseling Association. Peterson received the award at the ACA convention in March. The award recognizes Peterson for scope of practice, innovations in group work and promotion of group work publications and presentations.
