Appointments, promotions, faculty and staff honors

Appointments and promotions:

– Bruce Hamaker, professor of food science, is the new director of Purdue's Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research. Hamaker recently headed the cereals laboratory of the Whistler Center. His research covers the use of maize, sorghum and rice in cereal and cereal product digestibility. Hamaker's honors include the School of Agriculture Team Award in 1998, Agricultural Research Award in 2000 and a University Faculty Scholar in 2002.

– Suzanne Nielsen has been appointed head of Purdue's Department of Food Science, effective June 10. She will succeed Philip Nelson, who has been in the position since the department was founded in 1983. Nielsen joined the Purdue faculty in 1983. As a food chemist, she has focused her research on proteins that affect the quality of food. Nielsen has chaired the Indiana Section of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), has served on numerous IFT national committees, is an IFT fellow and received the 2002 IFT William V. Cruess Award for Teaching.

Faculty and staff honors:

– David Kucik, coach of the Purdue Crew rowing club, has been named the Dad Vail Coach of the Year. The Dad Vail, which takes place this weekend (Saturday, 5/10) at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, is the largest intercollegiate rowing race in the United States. The Purdue Crew has won an "all points" trophy for four consecutive years. The Purdue Crew, a club in which members pay their own expenses, also is celebrating its 50-year anniversary.

– Philip Nelson, professor of food processing and preservation, has been elected to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology. The academy council recognized Nelson for his outstanding service to the field of food science and technology internationally. His election to the academy will be officially recognized July 18 during the opening ceremonies of the 112th World Congress of Food Science and Technology in Chicago.
