May 9, 2003 Purdue trustees OK appointments, professorshipsINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 5/9) approved a distinguished professorship and the appointments of two deans and a vice chancellor. The trustees, who met at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, also named a building on the West Lafayette campus and added a new degree and awarded a posthumous degree at two regional campuses. Alastair M. Morrison has been named a Distinguished Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the West Lafayette campus.
"Alastair Morrison has been a leader in learning, outreach, discovery and administration in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences," Provost Sally Mason said. "He has stepped up in many administrative roles for the school and lent his tourism expertise to assist Indiana, as well as organizations all over the world." Morrison, an associate dean of learning and director of International Programs in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, is internationally known for tourism and tourism marketing. He is the North American editor of Tourism Management and an editorial board member of several major hospitality and tourism academic research journals. Prior to joining the Purdue faculty in 1985, he spent 11 years in Canada as a management consultant in hospitality and tourism. He is the author of three books on tourism and marketing development, and he has written more than 100 academic articles and conference proceedings. Morrison is a founding member of the Purdue Teaching Academy. He has received six teaching awards from Purdue, including the Charles B. Murphy Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching. In 1998 the International Society of Travel & Tourism Educators selected Morrison as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to tourism education. In 1993 he earned his doctorate in instructional research and development from Purdue. He received his master's of business administration from Michigan State University in 1974 and his bachelor's degree in hotel and catering management from the University of Strathclyde, Scottish Hotel School in 1972. This designated professorship brings the number of Purdue distinguished professors to 57. The number of named professors is 33.
The board ratified three upper administrative appointments: George W. Hynd, as dean of the School of Education; Mark Pagano, as dean of continuing education and conferences; and Nabil A. Ibrahim, vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University Calumet. All three appointments are effective July 1. Hynd has been on the University of Georgia faculty for 24 years. He is the associate dean for research in the College of Education at the University of Georgia and the Distinguished Research Professor of Special Education. His administrative experience there includes serving as director of the School of Professional Studies, chair for the Division of the Education of Exceptional Children and chairman of the school psychology program.
Pagano, a professor of mechanical engineering technology, has been the interim dean of continuing education and conferences since July. From 1996 to 2001, Pagano served as assistant dean of the School of Technology and administrator of Purdue's Statewide Technology System. He began teaching at Purdue in 1992. He was named the acting head of the mechanical engineering technology department in 1993, and became head of the department in 1994.
Since 1992 Ibrahim, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Purdue Calumet, has held various administrative positions at San Jose State University, including most recently that of associate vice president and dean of graduate studies and research. His area of expertise is in fatigue resistance of dual-phase steel. The trustees also approved a bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. "This program will provide an opportunity for IUPUI students to construct individual majors that are science-based and interdisciplinary but are not currently represented by existing undergraduate programs," said William M. Plater, acting chancellor. In other business, the board also named the newly constructed forestry facility at the West Lafayette campus the John S. Wright Forestry Center. A posthumous associate degree from Purdue North Central also was awarded to Christian E. Stayrook, of Chesterton, Ind., who completed 80 percent of the requirements for an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology. Stayrock, 28, died on Feb. 18.
