May 9. 2003 Purdue trustees approve student fees, preliminary budgetINDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 5/9) approved a preliminary 2003-04 budget plan that will increase basic fees on the West Lafayette campus by $280 a year for full-time students from Indiana. Fees will go up 5 percent for in-state students at all of the Purdue campuses and in the statewide technology program. Non-Indiana residents will pay 8.5 percent more at all campuses except Purdue-Calumet, where the increase will be 5 percent to compete for nearby Illinois students. "This fee increase will provide the revenue Purdue needs to continue improving academic quality and to keep us on track to achieve our strategic plan goals," said President Martin C. Jischke. "The increase for in-state students is within the range recommended by the Commission for Higher Education, and we believe it maintains Purdue's position as one of the best bargains in higher education. "Purdue also is working to keep itself accessible to all Indiana students through the recently announced drive to raise $200 million for scholarships and the creation of the Purdue Opportunity Awards Program. Purdue will provide one freshman from each Indiana county a total financial aid package consisting of federal, state and Purdue aid that will pay for tuition, room and board for their first year at our university." The budget includes a 2 percent increase in the salary pool, plus an additional allocation for faculty merit increases. This year Purdue's tuition and fees ranked sixth in the Big Ten. When considering the total income from student fees and state funding per student, Purdue ranks in the lowest quarter of the Big Ten. All undergraduate students enrolled in Purdue's Krannert School of Management also will be assessed an additional $400 per semester. "Krannert is one of the finest business schools in the world," Jischke said. "The additional fees will be targeted at strategic areas that will continue to make the students' education a tremendous value." Starting next fall, total fees at the West Lafayette campus for Indiana students continuously enrolled before fall 2002 will be $4,808. Indiana students who enrolled after fall 2002 will pay $5,860. Nonresident students will pay $16,556 and $17,640, respectively. Fees approved by the trustees for previously enrolled and newly enrolled in-state students at other Purdue campuses are: • Purdue Calumet – $4,106 and $4,611. • Purdue North Central – $4,146 and $4,711. • Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne – $4,572 and $5,107. Fees for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis are set by the trustees of Indiana University. Purdue's trustees also added a new $50 per semester fee for international students. That fee will be assessed to about 2,100 undergraduate and 2,900 graduate students. Many other Big Ten schools, including Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois, already charge similar fees to fund special programs for international students. The 2003-04 general fund budget is anticipated to be more than $638 million for the West Lafayette campus and nearly $794 million systemwide. Purdue's overall operating budget is made up of the general fund; federal and industrial research grants; gifts; financial aid; and income generated from self-supporting auxiliary enterprises, such as housing and food services, intercollegiate athletics and other service enterprises.
