Construction moves Jazz on the Hill to Hovde Hall

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Road closures and construction around Slayter Center have prompted Purdue University Bands to move its popular Jazz on the Hill to a different kind of hill – the steps of Hovde Hall.

The outdoor concert, which is free and open to the public, runs from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 25.

Musicians in four jazz bands, including the Purdue Jazz Band and a special Alumni Jazz Band, will set up outside Hovde. A limited number of chairs will be provided for plaza seating, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for lawn seating, as well as picnic dinners.

Kappa Kappa Psi band fraternity will sell sandwiches and soft drinks.

The Alumni Jazz Band program includes an arrangement of "Body and Soul" by Purdue alumnus Chet Bauch, who will be in attendance. The band also will play Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light" and Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball."

Another Bauch arrangement, a Latin version of "Take the A Train" called "Jose Takes Another Train," will be performed by the Purdue Jazz Band. The department's top ensemble also plans to perform two Sammy Nestico and Quincy Jones tunes – "Joy of Cookin'" and "Belly Roll."

Nestico tunes pop up in other portions of the program as well. Purdue's Concert Jazz Band will perform a Nestico arrangement of Count Basie's "Smack Dab in the Middle" and the Lab Band will perform "The Spirit is Willing."
