Nominations sought for Hovde Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nominations are being sought for the Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence. The annual award honors a Purdue University staff member who contributes to the well-being and progress of rural Indiana.

"Service to the citizens of rural Indiana is one of Purdue's hallmarks," said David Petritz, director of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service. "But the individuals who win this award go above and beyond the call of duty to benefit those people."

The award is in honor of Hovde, who was president of the university from 1946 until his retirement in 1971. Petritz said Hovde believed in putting higher education within everyone's reach. Petritz said he also demanded excellence in teaching, research and service from university staff members. Upon his retirement, the Indiana Farm Bureau presented Purdue with a monetary gift to sponsor an award in recognition of Hovde's 25 years of leadership in Indiana higher education.

Any Purdue staff member can be nominated for the award. Nominees may work for any school, division or unit of the university, including regional campuses and Purdue Extension. A staff member who was previously nominated can be renominated.

Nominations can be made by any individual or organization and should be accompanied by a one-page supporting statement. The nominee should contribute to higher education in one or more of the following areas: classroom and counseling performance, outstanding research achievement and/or outstanding Extension education programs and services.

Nominations forms are available on the web and are due by Sept. 26. Nominations should be sent electronically to ngoodman@purdue.edu or to The Hovde Award Committee, Purdue University Agricultural Administration Building, Room 102, 615 W. State St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2053.

Announcement of the winner takes place at the annual meeting of the Indiana Farm Bureau in December. The winner receives an $800 cash prize and a plaque. The recipient's name also appears on a permanent display in the Agricultural Administration Building on the West Lafayette campus.
