Student vocalists to square off at Purdue's U-Sing

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Since the revival of University Sing proved popular last year, the Purdue University tradition of student musical performances will carry on again this spring.

The event, commonly known as U-Sing, will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Slayter Center. It features a free, all-campus performance competition between Purdue housing units and student organizations.

Students can choose to perform through an independent organization, a housing unit or combine their talents with other students. Performances consist of an approximately three- to five-minute act or song (no lip-syncing) performed by a minimum of 25 students.

A panel of judges will rate the groups based on entertainment value, creativity/originality, execution and overall performance. The top three groups will be awarded trophies and prizes. A spirit award also will be given to the group that does the best job in promoting the event.

Brian Breed, director of Purdue Musical Organizations, says he is pleased PMO will honor the tradition again this year.

"Bringing U-Sing back to campus last year was an immense success," Breed says. "Our student organizations had a blast performing for one another and strutting their stuff on the Elliott Hall of Music stage. We’re looking forward to an even better turnout this year."

Student housing units and organizations who have registered for U-Sing include Theta Chi and Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma and Fairway Coop, Delta Upsilon and Alpha Chi Omega, and Sigma Kappa and Delta Sigma Phi. Additional groups are expected to participate.

At the conclusion of the competition, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club will again perform "Phenomena," which showcases a retrospective of contemporary song hits. This segment of the evening's finale is totally produced, directed and performed by Purdue students in the Purdue Varsity Glee Club.

The U-Sing steering committee is composed of student members of PMO, officers of Purdue Student Government, the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association, Purdue Cooperative Housing Council and PMO Managers Council.

The first U-Sing was held in 1913 close to Mother's Day. In 1972 the event date was moved to Mother's Weekend in April. Prior to 2002, University Sing had not taken place since 1998.
