April 4, 2003 Purdue chooses education dean from University of GeorgiaWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – George W. Hynd, University of Georgia's associate dean for research and external affairs, has been named the dean of the Purdue University School of Education.
The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today (Friday, 4/4) by Provost Sally Frost Mason, and is subject to approval by the Purdue Board of Trustees. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke said, "Dr. Hynd will take our School of Education to new levels in research, learning and engagement. His vision will be a guiding force in leading the School of Education's faculty as they educate the teachers of tomorrow." Mason said Hynd is well known for his administrative skills, as well as his research in understanding the neurobiological basis of childhood learning and behavior disorders often seen in school-aged children. "He is an outstanding academic researcher who will be an important administrator on Purdue's campus to meet the goals of the university's strategic plan," Mason said. "The faculty and staff in the School of Education are excited to begin making advances for the school under Dr. Hynd's leadership." Hynd has been on the University of Georgia faculty for 24 years. His previous administrative experience includes serving as director of the School of Professional Studies, chair for the division for the education of exceptional children and chairman of the school psychology program. He also is the Distinguished Research Professor of Special Education. He has contributed 11 books and 123 refereed journal articles and 116 professional publications to his field. Some of his awards include the Senior Scientist Award from the American Psychological Association in 2002, Norman Geschwind Memorial Lecture for the Orton Dyslexia Society in 1998 and Fullbright Teaching Fellowship in 1986. "Purdue's School of Education has a terrific reputation, and I have seen that firsthand as our College of Education at the University of Georgia has hired Purdue doctoral graduates," Hynd said. "Those Purdue graduates are some of University of Georgia's most stellar faculty. I look forward to the challenge of leading Purdue's School of Education into a new era, where resources and expertise are needed to foster creative ways to improve education in mathematics, science, technology and literacy." Hynd earned his doctorate in school psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1976. He received his master's degree in educational administration and supervision from University of Guam in 1975. He earned a master's degree in general-clinical psychology and a bachelor's degree in history from Pepperdine University in 1971 and 1970, respectively. Jerry L. Peters has been interim dean for the School of Education since July 2001. At the present time he plans to return to teaching, effective July 1, in the school's Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Peters succeeded Marilyn Haring, who returned to teaching in 2001. Purdue's School of Education began as the Department of Education in 1908. It now offers bachelor's degrees in elementary, social studies and special education. The departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Studies also offer graduate-level courses and degrees. The school serves more than 2,500 students with more than 70 faculty members. The School of Education has eight centers, institutes and programs – including the Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship, Gifted Education Resource Institute and Reading Recovery – to provide assistance through outreach and engagement for alumni and friends of education. Purdue is the only institution in Indiana that prepares secondary agricultural science and business teachers.
