Purdue Agriculture Events Weeks: 4/7/03 - 4/25/03 For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 April 8-10: Integrated Pest Management Symposium Purdue Extension and the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Illinois will offer the latest innovations in agricultural and urban integrated pest management. The event will be at The Westin Indianapolis, 50 South Capitol Ave., Indianapolis. Some of the topics to be covered include building alliances, opportunities for IPM implementation in the Farm Bill, marketing IPM, new management technologies, evaluation and impact assessment, urban IPM, IPM education and outreach, biological control and bio-based IPM, vertebrate and wildlife IPM, invasive species, risk management, biotechnology, and IPM in organic systems. April 12-13: Spring Fest This year's Spring Fest will be Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Science, Education, Liberal Arts, and Engineering will provide educational entertainment for youths and adults. Some of the new activities this year will allow visitors to solve a case like a forensic science detective, dress up in costumes like actors and actresses, build and launch a mini-rocket and create a charm with your name in hieroglyphics. Old favorites returning include Bug Bowl, Boiler Barnyard and many games and activities around campus. Visitors can obtain a map and a list of all the events on the web. Scavenger hunt questions also are posted so participants can print them off before coming to Spring Fest. All events are free and open to the public. April 18: Agricultural Research Award Ceremony Arun Bhunia will be honored at 2 p.m. in Whistler Hall, Room 116, for his research on pathogens. Bhunia is a microbiologist in Purdue's Department of Food Science. This award is given each year to a Purdue researcher that has received a doctorate in the last 15 years or less, and consists of a plaque, a $1,,000 honorarium and $5,000 for the recipient's research program. At the ceremony, Bhunia will give a seminar on his research, "Exploiting Pathogenic Signatures of Listeria monocytogenes for the Development of Biosensor-Based Detection Tools." A reception will follow the seminar. The event is free and open to the public. April 23: Financial Security In Later Life Conference Purdue Extension will host a conference on financial security and planning. This conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. It can be viewed at 11 sites across Indiana: Marion County Extension office, Allen County Extension office, Ivy Tech State College in Terre Haute, Ivy Tech State College in Muncie, Tippecanoe County Extension office, Bartholomew County Extension office, Orange County Extension office, Clark County Extension office, Lawrenceburg Public Library, Vanderburgh County 4-H Center and Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. A live teleconference will be held at each site from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with presentations from Jane Schuchardt, national program leader for the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, Extension Service, and Indiana State Treasurer Tim Berry. Schuchardt will present "Positioning for Success." Part of her message will deal with preparing for the future while keeping pace with today's obligations. Berry will present "Are you Motivated to be Financially Secure?" He will cover the wise use of credit, saving, planning for life's unexpected events and retirement planning. Local experts will give presentations in the afternoon. The topics to be discussed include conversations between generations – adult children and aging parents, retirement planning and the best road to travel to reach financial security. April 25: Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Awards Ceremony The Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Award recipients will be honored at 9:30 a.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. This year's recipients include William Carteaux of Strongsville, Ohio; Burnell Fischer of Indianapolis; Albert Lund of Newark, Del.; Evandro Chartuni Mantovani of Sete Lagoas, Brazil; Bret Marsh of Indianapolis; Kenneth Rulon of Cicero, Ind.; Janice Cervelli Schach of Clemson, S.C.; Sharrann Simmons of Wayne, N.J.; and J. Yun Tso of Fremont, Calif. Each award winner will give a presentation on their accomplishments. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke also will speak. This event is free and open to the public.
