March 25, 2003 Four distinguished chemists to lecture at Purdue WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Scientists from three countries will deliver this year's 20th annual Herbert C. Brown Lecture Series in Organic Chemistry on April 5 at Purdue University. The lectures, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, will share the theme of "Modern Organic and Metallorganic Chemistry." The event is free and open to the public. Speakers and lecture topics include: • Clayton Heathcock of the University of California at Berkeley, "Total Synthesis of Pinnaic Acid and Halichlorin." • Manfred T. Reetz of Germany's Max Planck Institute, "Evolution in the Test Tube as a Means to Create Enantioselective Enzymes." • Victor Sniekus of Ontario's Queens University, "Aromatic Metallation: A Continuing Education." • Peter J. Stang of the University of Utah, "Nanoscale Molecular Architecture: Design and Self-Assembly of Metallocyclic Polygons and Polyhedra via Coordination." The lecture series was established in 1984 to honor Purdue Nobel Laureate Herbert C. Brown and to provide a forum for Purdue faculty and students interested in current organic chemistry topics. Organic chemistry focuses on carbon-containing compounds and mixtures. Brown is internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of synthetic organic chemistry.
