March 25: Purdue Dairy Road Show

Purdue Extension has been touring the state addressing dairy production issues. The final stop of the show will take place at the Pinney-Purdue Agriculture Center, one-half mile north of U.S. 30 on the Porter-LaPorte county line road between Valparaiso and Wanatah. It will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon CST. Experts will give presentations on subjects that affect the dairy operation, including milk prices, cow management, the dairy check-off, marketing opportunities and waste management. Mike Schutz, Extension dairy specialist, will talk about the future price market for milk, marketing options and marketing tools. Don Jones, Purdue professor of agricultural and biological engineering, will discuss new regulations on animal waste management and the best ways to comply with them. Extension veterinarian Simon Kenyon's presentation on fresh cow management will focus on health maintenance and how to get a cow started on milk production. Associates of Milk Promotion Services Inc. will review dairy check-off initiatives and milk promotion in Indiana. The event is free, and prior registration is not required. April 4-5: Starting A Specialty Food Or Food Ingredient Business

Purdue Extension will help Indiana residents learn how to market their specialty food or food ingredients. The event will take place at the Indiana Farm Bureau Building, 225 East St., Indianapolis. Participants will learn how to start their own business, be introduced to contacts and other resources, and study entrepreneur case studies. Follow-up consultation services also will be offered to participants. Some of the topics to be discussed include market research, business planning, labeling and packaging, food ingredients, food safety and regulations, and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs in grain, fruit, meat and dairy will speak at the event. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. The cost is $100, which includes a technical guide for small-scale food entrepreneurship, one breakfast, two lunches and a dinner. Fifty dollars of the registration fee will be reimbursed once the follow-up consultation has been completed. Participants also will receive a certification of completion. April 8-10: Integrated Pest Management Symposium

Purdue Extension and the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Illinois will offer the latest innovations in agricultural and urban integrated pest management. The event will be at The Westin Indianapolis, 50 South Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis. Some of the topics to be covered include building alliances, opportunities for IPM implementation in the Farm Bill, marketing IPM, new management technologies, evaluation and impact assessment, urban IPM, IPM education and outreach, biological control and bio-based IPM, vertebrate and wildlife IPM, invasive species, risk management, biotechnology, and IPM in organic systems. To register for the symposium, visit their Web site. Registration fees are $250, $150 for students and $75 for an accompanying person. April 12-13: Spring Fest

This year's Spring Fest will be Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Science, Education, Liberal Arts, and Engineering will provide educational entertainment for youths and adults. Some of the new activities this year will allow visitors to solve a case like a forensic science detective, dress up in costumes like actors and actresses, build and launch a mini-rocket and create a charm with your name in hieroglyphics. Old favorites returning include Bug Bowl, Boiler Barnyard and many games and activities around campus. Visitors can obtain a map and a list of all the events on the web. Scavenger hunt questions also are posted so participants can print them off before coming to Springfest. All events are free and open to the public.
