March 11, 2003 Purdue theater students win regional honorsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Three Purdue University theater students brought home regional honors from the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Region III in Evansville, Ind. Jeremy Clark, a second-year graduate student from Great Falls, Mont., won top acting honors as one of two Irene Ryan Scholarship winners chosen from a pool of 344 student actors. Clark performed scenes from "Hurly Burly" and "Holy Ghosts." He will participate in a showcase of regional winners in April at the KC/ACTF National Festival in Washington, D.C. Laronika Thomas, a master's degree candidate from West Lafayette, Ind., received top honors in the National Critics' Institute competition. Thomas also will travel to the Kennedy Center to participate in the national competition. Audrey Watson, a sophomore theater major from Tipton, Ind., was selected as the top choice in the Regional Design Competition for costumes. She designed costumes for the show "A Little Night Music." KC/ACTF is a national theater education program that identifies and promotes quality in college-level theater production. Last year more than 1,200 productions involving more than 20,000 students from throughout the country were entered in KC/ACTF competitions. Russ Jones, Purdue Department of Theatre chair, says he was pleased the Purdue students' hard work was recognized. "It was a wonderful culmination to the festival to hear the names of three Purdue students announced as winners," Jones said. "These students, along with the others who participated in the festival, are dedicated to developing their talents, and the festival provided a great opportunity for feedback from their peers." In addition to the regional winners, three other students fared well at KC/ACTF. Ben Lawson, a senior theater major from Columbus, Ind., and Mark Jamerson, a senior theater major from Columbus, Ind., who served as sound co-designers for "The Diviners," reached the finals of the Barbizon Award for Design Excellence competition in the area of sound design. Erin E. Reitz, a second-year graduate student from Lincoln, Neb., reached the semifinals of the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition.
