Purdue sponsors Spring Leadership Lecture SeriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Student Activities and Organizations area of the Office of the Dean of Students will bring two nationally recognized speakers to Purdue University for its Spring Leadership Lecture Series. Both speeches are free and open to the public. Craig Little, director of alumni societies at Ohio State University, will present "The Power of Value-Centered Leadership" at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. His workshop will help leaders discover the foundations of their personal values and the role values play in leadership and ethical decision-making. Ethical leadership is important in order to maintain the credibility of the organization and the individual leader," Little says. "Credibility comes from doing what you say you will do, either as an organization or an individual. Little manages 47 special interest alumni organizations. Prior to joining the staff at Ohio State in 1996, he served for five years as the assistant executive director for Phi Kappa Tau fraternity headquarters in Oxford, Ohio. He also was assistant director of development and adviser to fraternities and sororities at the University of Oklahoma. A second speech on leadership will be delivered by Vernon Wall, assistant dean of students and director of student activities at Iowa State University. He will present "Lead with Style!" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in Fowler Hall. Wall says understanding different personality styles is essential for effective communication. As leaders we interact with different styles and personalities daily," Wall says. "Some we connect with, some we clash with. I believe that our ability to work effectively in groups can be enhanced if we take time to not only develop our styles, but learn others' styles. You're about to find out which song best describes your personality: "Control," "Wild Thing," "We Are Family" or "Things That Make You Go ... Hummm. Prior to his current position at Iowa State, Wall accumulated 19 years of professional student affairs experience at the University of Georgia, UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Chapel Hill. He has experience in Greek life, new student orientation, student activities, leadership development and university housing. In 1998 Wall served as a member of the student life staff with the Semester at Sea program in which he accompanied 600 students on a voyage around the world. Wall also serves as a senior consultant for The Washington Consulting Group, an agency specializing in multicultural organizational change, and is one of the founders and facilitators of the Social Justice Training Institute. He has written several articles and has co-edited two books for the higher education community: "Beyond Tolerance: Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals on Campus" and the recently released "Toward Acceptance: Sexual Orientation Issues On Campus." Bridget Williams Golden, leadership coordinator of Student Activities and Organizations, says both speakers will enlighten and entertain future campus and community leaders. The Leadership Lectures Series is a new program," Golden says. "We believe that all students, as well as staff, faculty, and community members, have the ability to lead. These lectures will help leaders learn new information as well as assist emerging leaders along their leadership path."
