Purdue symposium to address age-related diseases

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University-University of Alabama at Birmingham Botanicals Research Center on Friday (2/28) will present a symposium on age-related diseases.

The symposium, in Purdue's Stewart Center, will focus on the use of foods and nutritional supplements to combat diseases often associated with the aging process, such as osteoporosis, cancer, hypertension and cognitive disorders.

The daylong symposium is open to the public, and presentations will be geared toward a general audience and are not meant only for academics.

The morning session, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, will feature breakfast and research presentations by specialists from several universities. Topics will include cancer prevention, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Breakfast is free, and no reservations are required.

Over lunch, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Rutgers University's Jim Simon will speak on "Tabloid Medicine: Miracle Drugs from the Supermarket." Lunch will be served in the Purdue Memorial Union's East/West Faculty Lounge. No additional reservations are being accepted for the lunch session.

The afternoon session will be dedicated to poster presentations by the scientists (from 1-3 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 218) and also by representatives of Purdue's Discovery Park (from 3-4:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214). The presentations will provide insights into future research projects. No reservations are required.

There also will be a guided tour of the university's accelerator mass spectrometry facility, which aids in the study of a broad range of subjects, from osteoporosis to cholesterol uptake and soil erosion to groundwater movement. The tour will run from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

The Botanicals Research Center, which was established in 2000, is one of four National Institutes of Health funded botanicals research centers in the United States. More information on the center is available online.
