February 21, 2003 Highlights of 2002 at Purdue available on videoWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 48th edition of the Purdue Newsreel is now available for viewing from the Instructional Media Center in the Purdue Undergraduate Library or for purchase from the Purdue Alumni Association. The 22-minute program, which highlights Purdue events from 2002, was produced by the Broadcast Services unit of the Office of University Relations. The movie, "On the Path to Preeminence," is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Alumni Foundation and the Office of the President. It is shown to Purdue alumni clubs around the world. The 2002 newsreel is narrated by 1981 Purdue graduate Tim Newton, who is director of external relations and communication for the Krannert School of Management. The program was produced and directed by Ray Cubberley, director of broadcast services in university relations. A copy of the newsreel on VHS videotape can be purchased for $19.95, plus $3 for shipping and handling, from the Purdue Alumni Association, Purdue Memorial Union, Room 160, 101 N. Highlights in the 2002 newsreel include: the kick-off of Purdue's $1.3 billion campaign; events from Discover Purdue week, including the largest individual and corporate gifts; the campaign on the road in Chicago; the opening of the Office of Engagement in Indianapolis; the Science Bound program; Leah Jamieson as Indiana professor of the year; the Comparative Oncology Program in the School of Veterinary Medicine; the new NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training for Advanced Life Support; a gift to the libraries of Amelia Earhart items; the Great Blimp Race; the return of U-Sing; May commencement; singing by Miss Indiana Tangra Riggle, a liberal arts senior; the new golden girl and girl in black; administrative changes; the death of longtime administrator John Hicks; the proscenium theater gift by former President Arthur Hansen; construction of the Visual and Performing Arts building; the new "Transformation" sculpture; the dedication of the renaming of the Liberal Arts and Education Building as Beering Hall; construction of Rawls Hall; groundbreakings for the Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana, the expansion of the Purdue Research Park, the Dauch Alumni Center, the Chemical Engineering addition, and the Bowen Civil Engineering Laboratory; the new press box and private suites at Ross-Ade Stadium; the remodeled facility for WBAA Radio; and a planned housing complex for the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne campus. Other events in the video include: the retirement of Alumni Association Senior Associate Director Jack Karl; PAA's annual senior send-off; Gala Weekend events including, alumni marching to John Purdue's grave, the Grand Prix race, and alumni citizenship awards; Purdue Day in Chicago at Navy Pier; Purdue Day in Indianapolis at the Indiana State Fair; Homecoming events, including the parade and activities on Purdue Mall; the PAA Special Boilermaker Awards and Young Alumni Awards; football highlights, including recapturing the Old Oaken Bucket and winning the Sun Bowl; highlights from men's and women's basketball; the women's soccer team upsetting Michigan on its way to its first ever NCAA appearance; golfer Lee Williamson, who won the 102nd Indiana Amateur Championship; the cheerleading squad, which finished second in the National Cheerleaders Association competition; and closing comments from Alumni Association Executive Director Larry Preo.
