February 20, 2003 "Blast II: Shockwave" explodes onto Elliott stage March 12WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – "Blast II: Shockwave," a high-energy mix of music, color and precision choreography, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Elliott Hall of Music. Admission is $39, $33, $28 and $14 for general public, and $28, $24, $20 and $12 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. "Blast II: Shockwave" is presented by Purdue Convocations. Blending the disciplines of dance, gymnastics, drum-and-bugle corps and color guards into a theatrical extravaganza, "Blast II: Shockwave" brings athleticism, wit and a blend of musical genres to the stage. The eclectic mix of music performed in "Blast II: Shockwave" includes jazz, classical, blues, rock and swing. Selections include pieces such as selections from Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child," and the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations." Steeped in the tradition of military and outdoor pageantry, drum corps, bands and color guards have a long history in America. "Blast!" originally grew from the drum corps Star of Indiana, which was founded in 1984 in Bloomington by businessman Bill Cook to benefit young people in music education. Star of Indiana moved from its beginnings to bring the power, passion and precision of outdoor pageantry to the stage in a musical performance, "Blast!" "Blast II: Shockwave" continues the legacy of "Blast!," winner of the 2001 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event and 2001 Emmy Award for Best Choreography. With color, light, movement and music, "Blast II: Shockwave" ignites this new contemporary genre with cutting-edge artistry while retaining all the intrinsic elements of "Blast!" The Chicago Tribune hailed "Blast II: Shockwave" as "a rousing, non-stop mix of spectacle and sound," and London's Daily Telegraph called it "a high-powered, cutting-edge show with dynamic dance routines like you've never seen before."
