Beta Gamma Sigma initiates new members, celebrates anniversary

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University’s chapter of the national business and management fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma, will initiate 40 new undergraduate members on Thursday (2/20).

To be eligible, management students must be in the upper 7 percent of the junior class and the upper 10 percent of the senior class. At the graduate level, MBA students must be in the upper 20 percent of their graduating classes; doctoral students must have completed all of their requirements for graduation.

Purdue Beta Gamma Sigma chapter adviser Jack Hatcher, Krannert School assistant professor of accounting, said that Beta Gamma Sigma membership is a high honor.

"Initiation into Beta Gamma Sigma is the most significant form of recognition at the Krannert School," Hatcher said. "Dennis Weidenaar, Krannert School professor of economics and former dean, is the national president of Beta Gamma Sigma this year. We have one of the most active chapters in the country, and Weidenaar has been at the heart of it."

Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management, is president of the local chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. A. Charlene Sullivan, associate professor of finance, is the secretary-treasurer. Phillip J. Scaletta, professor of business law, serves as national historian for the fraternity.

The national Beta Gamma Sigma is celebrating its 90th anniversary on Feb. 19.

Last year, two Purdue alumni were recipients of high awards by Beta Gamma Sigma.

Michael Birck, an electrical engineering graduate who is chairman of Tellabs Inc., received the fraternity's highest honor, the International Honoree Award, in Chicago. Birck is a member of Purdue’s board of trustees.

Jerry S. Rawls, a Krannert master’s degree graduate, was the recipient of Beta Sigma Gamma's 2002 Medal for Entrepreneurship.
