Consumer sciences offers spring European fashion study tour

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue consumer sciences and retailing department is offering a study tour of European fashion centers on May 19-31.

"We'll visit boutiques, department stores and even the costume shop at the La Scala Opera House in Milan, "said Mary Jane Matranga, one of the tour leaders and a continuing lecturer in apparel design and technology. "We'll go behind the scenes in the fashion industry and meet the players, including professionals in retail, marketing and design. We'll also compare differences in styling in the different European fashion centers ‹ Rome Florence, Milan and Paris."

Co-leading the tour is Nancy Strickler, a continuing lecturer in apparel design and technology. She said, "We'll do a lot of shopping, but that¹s considered research in our field."

The European leader of the tour is Peter Carman, director of the Paris American Academy.

Tour participants will earn three undergraduate credit hours in Consumer Sciences and Retailing 390. The tour leaders expect most of the participants to come from the 80 apparel design and technology members in the consumer sciences and retailing department.

Community members can also take the tour. Costs are $3,129 for Indiana residents and $4,149 for non-Indiana residents. Those costs cover tuition and fees, program fee, partial room and board (double occupancy) and insurance.

Airfare is $798, and non-covered meals are approximately $170. The maximum number of tour participants is 24, and registration deadline is March 1.

Matranga said tour participants also will have the opportunity to have "an intense experience in French and Italian culture, including museums, cuisine and the difference in fashion ‹ colors, silhouette and styling."
