February 13, 2003 Scholarships available for non-traditional students WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Office of the Dean of Students is accepting applications from non-traditional students for scholarships worth at least $1,000. The deadline for submitting applications for the Helen B. Schleman Scholarship is March 1. Betsy Smithka, associate dean of students, says the scholarships are made possible by the generosity of a former dean of students. "Helen B. Schleman, dean of women from 1947 to 1968, left a generous bequest in her will to be used for Purdue University undergraduate women students," Smithka says. "A committee of her friends and colleagues decided to establish a scholarship program for non-traditional aged students (24 years or older) with this bequest. Dean Schleman had a special interest in encouraging adults to continue their education at Purdue University and established the Span Plan Program to provide support to these older students." The Span Plan Program is designed to serve adult learners at Purdue by helping them adjust to the university environment. The program also provides academic, career and personal counseling. Scholarship selection criteria include financial need, educational and career focus, and letters of recommendation. Preference will be given to female applicants. Grant applications are available at the Office of the Dean of Students in Schleman Hall, Room 207.
