Purdue observes Disability Awareness Month

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University will observe Disability Awareness Month in March with panel discussions and an award ceremony to recognize students, faculty and staff who have contributed to campus accessibility.

The 2003 Focus Awards will be presented at a reception entitled Access Equals Opportunity, which will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, in the Purdue Memorial Union East Faculty Lounge. Past recipients include Fred Lytle, chemistry professor; William Field, professor of agriculture and biological engineering,; Kenneth Burns, executive vice president and treasurer; Betty Nelson, retired dean of students; student Allyson Matt and her guide dog Cooper; student Adam Rodenbeck and his guide dog Hamlet; and the service-learning group Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS).

James R. Bottum, vice president for information technology, will speak at the awards ceremony. Alysa C. Rollock, vice president for human relations, will present the awards.

Other events in recognition of Disability Awareness Month include a student-led panel discussion on disability and accessibility issues at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Stewart Center, Room 218. A distance-learning session entitled "Achieving & Sustaining Accessible Programs: Strategies for State and Local Governments" also will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in Stewart Center, Room 313. The session will explore strategies for how governments can meet the spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Another seminar, entitled "Accessible Information Technology in Education," will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, in a location to be announced. Robin Jones, director of the Great Lakes ADA and the Accessible IT Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will speak.
