February 6, 2003 Purdue police charge student in attackWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police arrested a 20-year old student early today (Thursday, 2/6) at Hilltop Apartments on Ross-Ade Drive for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Paul Chai Ching Lei, a freshman in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, from Hacienda Heights, Calif., was arrested on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, confinement and battery. He was taken to Tippecanoe County Jail after being arrested at about 4:35 a.m. today. His bail was set at $10,000. Ron Fosnaugh, Purdue police captain of special services, said officers were called to an apartment in Hilltop Apartment Building 10 where Lei had allegedly attacked his 20-year old girlfriend, who was visiting from England. Fosnaugh said the argument began when the victim told Lei she wanted to break up with him. According to police, Lei refused to let her leave the apartment, grabbed her arm and then confined her in a bathroom. Fosnaugh said the woman was slapped, scratched, choked and was threatened with a butcher knife. Lei allegedly told the woman that he was going to kill her, police said. The victim had scratches and red marks on her neck. She declined treatment at the time. Criminal confinement is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine; intimidation with a deadly weapon is a Class C felony, punishable by up to eight years in prison and a $10,000 fine; and battery resulting in injury is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine.
