Black Cultural Center sponsors poetry reading on human rights

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Haraka Writers, an ensemble sponsored by the Black Cultural Center at Purdue University, will present poems inspired by the "Images of Human Rights" artwork currently on display at the Stewart Center Gallery.

The presentation will take place at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Stewart Center Gallery. "Images of Human Rights" is a portfolio of black-and-white woodcuts that celebrate the South African Bill of Rights. Renee Thomas, BCC director, says the poems are intended to complement the exhibit.

"The Haraka Writers reflected on a forward for the exhibit, written by Archbishop Emeritus Rev. Desmond M. Tutu," Thomas says. "It states, 'The work of the artists represented in the exhibition reflects the complexity, passion and richness of South Africa's rainbow nation. It does not belong to any particular artistic style, educational tradition or cultural background. It is the product born of South Africa's diversity. 'Images of Human Rights' weaves together the dreams and aspirations of us all. It is a dedication to the spirit of hope, and a celebration of South Africa's place among the nations which respect and uphold human rights.'"

The Bill of Rights includes 27 clauses such as equality, freedom from slavery, citizenship, housing, children's rights and the choice of language and culture, to name a few.
