January 31, 2003 English class designs logo for Human Relations commissionsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A semester-long service project has left the mark of professional writing students in the community. English professor David Blakesley engaged 18 students in English 203, "Research Methods in Professional Writing," to help the Human Relations commissions of Lafayette, West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County develop a new logo and motto. The new design will appear on letterhead and other public displays to help raise awareness for the commissions.
Purdue's Office of Engagement awarded Blakesley a $1,500 grant for students to create an awareness campaign for the commissions. Last fall, the students were divided into five teams that developed a media packet that included a new logo, motto, brochure, flyer, television ad and Web site. They also organized a local contest to solicit design ideas for the logo and motto. "These professional writing students developed skills to collaborate on a complex project, solicit feedback and communicate among their teams," said Blakesley, director of professional writing and member of the Tippecanoe County Human Relations Commission. The students invited high school and Purdue students to participate in the logo and motto contest, which is part of the Vision 2020 awareness campaign. Central Catholic students Jenny Weaver and Sara Loser won the logo and motto category, respectively. They each received a cash award of $125. Bo Kim, from Harrison High School, received honorable mention. The Purdue professional writing class received 25 entries.
