Lambing school provides hands-on experience

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Inexperienced and veteran sheep producers are invited to the Purdue University Lambing School on Feb. 15.

The hands-on experience available to the participants is an integral part of the program.

"The school is scheduled at a time when there will be a high number of ewes lambing," said Mike Neary, Extension sheep specialist. "This allows us to maximize the hands-on portion of the course."

Topics to be discussed include nutrition, health considerations, lambing barn obstetrics and newborn lamb management practices.

Presenters include Neary; Wayne Singleton, Extension livestock specialist; Dawn Frank, doctor of veterinary medicine; and Gerald Kelly, shepherd.

The school will be at the Purdue Animal Science Research and Education Center from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and includes breakfast, lunch and educational materials. The last day for registration is Feb. 7, and registration is limited. To register or for more information, contact Neary at (765) 494-4849 or by e-mail at mneary@purdue.edu.

The Department of Animal Sciences and Purdue Extension, along with the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association, are sponsoring the event.
