Stopping juvenile violence is at the root of conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A three-day workshop for community teams as well as interested individuals will focus on the prevention of juvenile violence.

The Keeping Kids Safe workshop will run Feb. 25-27 and will take place at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Columbus, Ind. The Community Systemwide Response Initiative at Purdue University, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Communities Against Rape Initiative at Purdue are co-sponsors.

"This is an opportunity for people to learn about issues that professionals face when working with youth and how to effectively deal with them," said Pam Robbins, Community Systemwide Response coordinator for Indiana.

One of the keynote speakers brings a unique approach to stopping violence, Robbins said. Jan Arnow, the founder and executive director of the Institute to Prevent Youth Violence in Louisville, Ky., will present the "No More Violence Bus Tour" on Feb. 25. It is a traveling program that will take people on a tour of violence in their own communities.

Participants may attend the full three-day conference or one-day sessions. Session topics and times are:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 25 (9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.) – "No More Violence Bus Tour."

  • Wednesday, Feb. 26 (7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) – "Bridge Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities."

  • Thursday, Feb. 27 (7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.) – "Youth Sexual Assault and Rape," "Teaching Youth Through Interactive Theater" and "Fighting Hate and Promoting Tolerance."

"This conference brings cutting-edge information from nationally known speakers to Hoosier professionals so they don't have to leave the state," Robbins said.

The cost of the three-day conference is $235 and $85 for a one-day registration. The registration fee includes materials, lunches, continental breakfasts and breaks. Registration for the conference is due by Feb. 15 to Pam Robbins, Department of 4-H Youth Development, Purdue University AGAD Building, Room 214, 615 W. State St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2053.
