January 28, 2003 Friends remember Purdue's John W. Hicks
Richard Sullivan Lee, an associate professor of visual and performing arts, recites Ernest L. Thayer's poem "Casey at the Bat" during a memorial service for John W. Hicks on Monday (1/28) at Purdue University's West Lafayette campus. Hicks, who was known for reciting the classic poem, died Dec. 20 at age 81. He served Purdue for more than 40 years and had a major impact on Indiana higher education. He was senior vice president emeritus, served for many years as the university's liaison with the state of Indiana and was an emeritus professor of agricultural economics. He is credited with playing an important role in creating and developing Indiana's system of higher education. The undergraduate library at West Lafayette was named for Hicks, as was the baseball field at Purdue North Central.
