Appointments and promotions; faculty and staff honors; retirements

Appointments and promotions
– April Ginther, has been named director of Purdue University's Oral English Proficiency Program. Ginther has been at Purdue since 1996, and has been the director of Oral English Proficiency Program testing since 1998. She has a background in language assessment and was a leader in developing Purdue's Oral English Proficiency Test, a state-of-the-art computer-based test. This program implements university policy governing the employment of international graduate students who are candidates for teaching assistantships. The Oral English Proficiency Program's responsibilities include annual certification and administration of oral English proficiency tests to graduate students. Ginther succeeds Margie Berns, professor of English, who will continue as director of the English as a Second Language Program. (APN)

Faculty and staff honors:
– Richard F. Borch, professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology, has been elected to the rank of fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He will receive his award at the AAAS annual meeting Feb. 15 in Denver during the AAAS Fellows Forum. According to his AAAS award citation letter, Borch is being honored for his "distinguished contributions to the field of anticancer drugs, particularly the synthesis and study of mechanism-based phosphoramidates as novel anticancer agents." AAAS was founded in 1848. With more than 134,000 members, it is the world's largest general scientific society. [cb]

– Tammy Loew, alcohol risk reduction coordinator for the Purdue Student Health Center, has received an inaugural award from the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking. Loew played a key role in educating legislators and testifying to get a keg tracking bill passed into law. She continues to serve as a member of the coalition's Higher Education Initiatives Action Team.

Retirements
– Lanny Wilson, director of administration for Purdue University Residences, will retire Friday (1/31) after nearly 40 years of service to Purdue.
